Teething, Tummy and Togetherness

Lukas has his first two teeth! The first bottom tooth popped through the gums with a lot of pomp and circumstance (read: crying and sleeplessness) in the middle of February. The second tooth pushed through the gums a week later with some crankiness and fitful sleep on both Lukas's and my part. I've been a bit surprised with how long the teeth take to actually peek through the gums enough to get a good photo. We've been attempting to take one for a few weeks now, but I think the teeth are now both at a point where you can see them (check out the photo below).

Along with the arrival of Lukas's pearly whites came the desire to use them! He has since been chewing on anything and everything in sight from burp cloths to toys and sometimes the nipple of his bottle (which we're trying to keep from becoming a habit). Things like table corners and books are also tempting and could provide lots of oral satisfaction if only Mommy were to allow Lukas to chew on them too! Lukas's tongue is now a novelty (at least to Lukas) as he sticks it out several times throughout the day. No, he's not being "cheeky" as the British would put it, but he seems to really like the sensation of his teeth against the underside of his tongue.

In the last week or so, Lukas's teeth and tummy have had a meeting and apparently they've decided that they aren't satisfied with only chewing on toys and swallowing spit and formula, but they would like to try "solid" food as well. Lukas has been eyeing our food and drink for some time now, but he has now begun waking again once during the wee hours of the morning and crying out of hunger. He has a visit with the pediatrician tomorrow afternoon at which time our doctor will give us instructions for starting "solids" and hopefully over the course of the next week or two the nightwaking will once again cease.

Lukas rolls over very well now from tummy to back and back to tummy. His favorite position at the moment seems to be his tummy as he has begun turning himself over to sleep on his tummy and he doesn't like to spend too much time on his back during playtime either. Lukas now sticks his bum in the air and sometimes manages to scoot around, but we're still far from crawling. He's also working on the skill of sitting up by himself. He can sit up on his own for 10 seconds at the most and can lean forward, grab toys and bring them to his mouth during this time, but then promplty falls over to one side. Exciting times!

We've made more of an effort recently to have more "fun" times of family togetherness. Lukas and I are now part of a weekly Gymboree class where moms and babies get together to play, sing and explore sounds, visual displays etc. Lukas seems to like the class a lot as it provides new and different stimulation for him.

We took Lukas swimming in a heated pool the weekend before last and he LOVED that experience! He splashed all around with his arms so much that he swallowed some water, but other than a good cough to clear his throat, he didn't seem to be bothered by that happenstance. I'm currently looking to enroll him in a babies' swimming class. So far I've found only French speaking classes, but we can probably manage that as I would assume most instructions would be pretty simple and visual (I'm pretty good at reading body language and gestures). :-)

Olli's parents were here for a few days while on their way to a ski vacation in Chamonix, France. They arrived on Lukas's 6th month birthday and even brought him a very nice "half-birthday" present, which he unwrapped all by himself (see the photo below). On Saturday, we all went to a chocolate festival in Versoix (the town where I used to teach 6th grade) and Lukas was a star! He enjoyed watching all the people bustling about, had fun playing with the two hot air balloons we hung from his stroller and, although he seemed oblivious to the chocolate making machines when we toured the factory, I'm sure he didn't miss the rich, scintillating smell of chocolate. Yum, yum!

(This week I hope to use the high chair for feeding him some cereal)
