The month of February was pretty low-key for the Höltje family, but March has started off with a real bang--quite literally!
Lukas and I fell down the marble stairs outside our apartment together on March 2nd. I was carrying a laundry basket in my left arm and Lukas in my right and my left foot simply slipped out from underneath me. In an instant, I let go of the laundry basket, tensed up my muscles on my right side and prayed that I would manage to hold onto Lukas and keep him from being injured. Thankfully, the Lord answered my prayers! Lukas cried for a minute or two out of fright, but then quickly recovered. I, on the other hand, did not. I hit the elbow and wrist of my right arm on the stairs during the fall. I didn't think anything was broken, but the pain was pretty severe in both places. I had difficulty getting myself and Lukas off of the stairs and back into the apartment at first and nearly blacked out in the process, but managed to get us both safely inside and call Olli. Olli came home from work and took me to the E.R. (my very first time in Geneva) where my arm was x-rayed. Praise the Lord that my injuries only amounted to contusions and a little tendon damaged, which caused some temporary numbness in my right pinky finger and palm just below it. I am healing very quickly and am so grateful that nothing worse happened!
After an hour or so in the E.R., Olli decided to take Lukas home while the rest of my tests were being run etc. While at home, Lukas sustained a small injury of his own. He was playing inside the laundry basket (which I had discarded in the entryway of our apartment after the fall down the stairs) and fell forward and received his first rug burn! See the photo below.
March 3rd brought another trip to the E.R.--this time the children's E.R. (another first!) because it was Lukas who was injured. As we were getting ready to leave for our Kindermusik class Tuesday morning, Lukas tripped over my feet and hit his forehead on the corner of the bed. I knew immediately from his cry that this was a more serious bump than most he had sustained in the past and when I moved his head off my shoulder to take a look, I saw blood and the fact that the wound was probably deep enough for a stitch or two. So, off we went to the E.R.--again! The doctors confirmed that it needed a stitch, but because Lukas is so young and it would be painful to get an actual stitch and difficult to stay still for the procedure, they decided to use a special glue to hold the skin closed while it starts to heal. So, here's a photo of my son with his first "deep" wound. (The bruise on Lukas' left cheek, which is a little difficult to see here, was a result of wrestling with his Papa who accidentally head-butted Lukas into his changing table two days prior. As I am learning, boys will be boys and men will also sometimes be boys! :-) )

Lukas turned 18 months old March 6th and has been eating yogurt with a spoon all by himself for a few weeks now (as you can see below--this was well before any of the injuries to his head)! The process is a bit messy, but he enjoys it and it's nice to see him learn a new skill. He really is growing up!
Lukas spoke his first "two-word" phrase today--well at least I think that's what it was! Lukas is an early waker (he gets up around 6a.m. every morning no matter what--even though, believe me, we've tried to get him to sleep longer!). So Olli and I trade off who gets up with him on the weekends so that the other person can sleep a little longer. Therefore, when the door to our bedroom is closed, Lukas usually knows that the other person (either Mommy or Papa) are in the room sleeping. Today, I had closed the door to our bedroom for another reason, but when Lukas later noticed it was closed, he assumed Papa was behind the door sleeping. He came over to me and said: "Mama. Papa?" and then went over to the bedroom door and again said: "Mama. Papa?" as if to ask me if Papa was behind the closed door. I opened the door and he went straight to Olli's side of the bed looking for him and after moving around the covers just to be sure that he hadn't missed his father, he turned back to me and lifted his hands and shrugged his shoulders as if to ask where his Papa was. I told him he was at work and Lukas whimpered a little at this news, but then went back to playing.

I can picture Lukas as the door talking and then shrugging his shoulders. He is awesome in so many ways (says his proud aunt). Thanks for sharing. :) I love you and miss you all very much!
That kid is so awesome! Oh man, the yogurt picture is priceless. I'm sorry to hear about your arm, and we'll continue to pray for quick healing. We miss you all terribly, and are very grateful that technology allows us to not miss out entirely! We will need to have a little video conference soon. Love you all!
