Most likely it's a boy!

We had our 16 week appointment at the end of last week and two exciting things happened.

First, we got to hear our baby's heartbeat for the first time. Until now, we had only seen it beating on the ultrasound monitor, but now we actually HEARD it beating. The heartbeat was very fast, which is normal for this stage of development, and sounded very strong! It was wonderful to have one more sign of life and connect to our baby in yet another way.

Secondly, we got to see our baby once again on the ultrasound, which is always thrilling. Normally, an ultrasound is not scheduled for this appointment, but I was really curious to know if the doctor could give us an idea about our baby's gender so I boldly asked him if we could "take a peek". :-) He was very obliging. After carefully examining the particular "parts", he told us that he thinks it's a boy, but that he will confirm this at our next visit at the end of this month. I had suspected all along that we were having a boy (and both my mom and mother-in-law thought so too!) so this was a fun confirmation. However, Olli is being a bit more cautious and telling our friends that our baby is 60/40 a boy. :-)

We have now begun to buy some baby items for our little one. There is an English radio station in Geneva that runs classifieds every week and people are always selling baby items. We now are the proud owners of a second-hand all-terrain Bugaboo stroller, Chicco travel cot, and other great items from one of our friends like a Moses basket and BundleMe wrap. Walking by these things in our spare room every day as well as the fact that my "bump" continues to grow makes the fact that we're having a baby more real.

Beyond that, and even more exciting, is the fact that I think I have already begun to feel the baby moving! It's hard to tell for sure, but it's certainly possible at this stage (although early for first moms). I can't wait until I get to the point where the movements are stronger and unmistakable, but I guess that will come with time. I'm trying to remind myself that patience is a virtue, but it's easier said than achieved. :-)

So exciting! I got your shower invitation that says "It's a boy!" so I had to come hear the details!Have you guys decided on a name yet? You are so smart to be looking at second hand items--especially for newborn stuff, but really all the way along. I have recently become the proud owner of lots of second hand shoes and a double stroller (b/c I started nannying 3 days a week). Congrats again! It's so much fun to hear about your pregnancy.
